Solids-Surface Capability

Is it possible in Solidworks to turn a model with several surfaces (e.g. - IGES File) which form a "watertight" boundary into a solid model? If so, can non-watertight surfaces be patched and then turned into a solid model?

Try the thicken command for a complete surface.

If this is imported data (ie, the dreaded IGES file) SW has tools to check, heal and form solids automatically.

When importing the file check out the options avaliable in the file open box. you have different settings as to how SW will handle the surfaces, (Knit, Don't knit, or form solid).

I would recommmend having the knit option selected but don't form solids on import. this gives you a chance to inspect the file.

when it is in SW if you right hand click on one of the surfaces in the feature manager you will see 2 options: import diagnostics and improve geometry. click the diagnostics and SW will check the files over letting you know if there is any dodgey/missing faces and you can also get SW to fix it at this stage, if it is successful, then it will automatically turn it into a Solid.
