Our company is getting prepared to make the jump to SW2003. Obviously, I would wish that it would go flawlessly. Has anyone experienced this transition and could offer advice on the proper timing of such an event? Also, any issues that your company faced when going thru this transition?

Thanks a lot.

Everybody with SW 2003 has gone through it, more than likely. You DON'T want to make the jump DURING a major project.

You DO want to make BACKUP's of ALL your SW part, assembly, drawing files, since the switch WILL make the files no-readable with 2001, in case you need to go back.

We didn't have any major problems, but some folks have. A lot of folks do NOT care one bit for 2003, but I think it just appears to be very bad, as most people that have no problems, are not going to complain about them.

Read the Maintenance Notes on each and every SW 2003 Service Pack. Might help you if you see something that you know will cause you a problem. If it does, then you can go one SP notch lower.

1) If you don't have your Reg codes already, you will have to install SW03 first then fill out the reg wizard. Then an email is sent to SW and you wil have to wait up to 24 hours for your reg codes from SW. Your VAR might be able to get them faster but you still have to fill out that reg wizard and send them the file that it makes when you file out the reg wizard.

2) Make sure that SW03 is what you want. The best way is to test it fully with your products (backups of your products).

3) You can run SW01+ and SW03 together at the same time. This makes it easier for you to test drive SW03. I strongly suggest you do this before installing SW03 over all computers.

4) don't install using an upgrade. Do a new full install of SW03 to a new directory. Not the default directory SW tells you too. (Example: Solidworks03

As many have mentiond, don't upgrade in the middle of a project. Being a consulting firm who deals with manufacturing firms, machine shops and everyone in between. We will install the latest major release for some uses and move new projects over and run the older projects on the previous release. Since 2003 was released around Feb. and they are already up to SP 3.1 most of the problems that people saw should be resolved.
