SolidWorks website announces the beta program for SW2005. Is there anyone who can tell us more about added functionality/improvements in SW2005?

While it's in beta, those that are testing it cannot give out that information. If you want to see for yourself then your going to have to be a beta tester.

I could tell you, but I'd have to kill you <grin>

I just hope the 2D functionality is a little better.

Apparently the software is not yet available for download

What is required when you are in the beta program? Do you have to use the software for a certain number of hours or antyhing? I checked out the SW website but looks like you can't get much info unless you sign up.

Nothing! You get to test it out in beta and see what theb eta version is all about. You have to remember it's beta it might crash or do weird things. Those things you report to SW. The more bugs you turn in, the better your chances are of you winning a prize. There are suppose to be 10 winners this year vs. the 5 they had last year.

I believe Gildashard (Jason Capriotti) won 1st place last year. Which by the way Jason how's that computer running that you won?

I'm not sure of the prizes this year, but I'm going to try and participate as much as possible. But between my home life and my work life it's hard to find the time to use it.

No, there are no requirements exactly. You install it, play around with it, and if you want to, use the online form to submit bugs, crashes, suggestions, quirkyness, etc.

You get points for your submitted issues. Top point leaders gets one of the prizes listed.

Some issues are worth more points than others, like repeatable crashes.

At least, that's how it worked last year.

Just curious, when I get 2005 for beta testing, can I download it or will it come on CD's? If I download it, can I install it seperate from 2004? My VAR did not know.

ctopher - I highly recommend installing it on a completely different machine, not using it on any of your production model work (copies are ok, just nothing you haven't got backed up on CD) because in the past you couldn't back rev your models (I don't know for a fact that you can or can't with 2005, and I couldn't admit it if I did know - I am just looking back to history.)

You should be able to install it on the same computer. I ALWAYS add the version at the end of my install path - C:\Program Files\Solidworks04 - That away, if I have more than one seat on my machine I'll know which one is which.

You will have to Download your Beta version from the site.

<Glonoin) I highly recommend installing it on a completely different machine
<SBaugh) You should be able to install it on the same computer

I do both: just a different boot OS. While the app itself can behave well on the same space, some of the activex stuff used in API coding doesnt play well with others.

If you use a lot of API callouts. That might be true. But if you don't (Like me) use a lot of API callouts then I have not seen an issue. But we all did move to the WI installer. This might have a large bearing on how SW05 will install on your machines. We will all find out when that day gets here.

The computer is a decent a machine and a nice prize that replaced my aging 400mhz P2. Sad part is that it's faster than my work PC. Just can't convince the powers that be, even with nearly 3 times faster rebuild times.
