Someone at my company recently purchased a laptop with Vista x64 OS on it. I knew SW2008 was built to run on Vista (32 at least), but I'm wondering if they are working on a patch for 64 or if they currently have anything.

Anyone have any ideas here?

Thanks,
Jay W.

Jay W,
I will find out. I am installing SolidWorks 2008 sp 4.0 on a 64 bit Vista machine right now.

I have the 64-bit version CD that comes with the set.

But that 2nd CD only lists XP 64bit, not Vista 64-bit. I tried installing on my laptop anyway, but was getting errors with a certain DLL file. Though, I do not have the Ultimate, Business, or Enterprise versions of Vista 64-bit. That might have been my problem.

Windows Vista Business is what I am using.
I did not get any errors installing SP 0.0

I think ... I don't recall off the top of my head, but I was thinking that Vista 64-bit was not supported until SP3 or 3.1 of SW08.

I just looked in the KB and here is what it said:

Solution Id: S-017964

Question:

Will SolidWorks® 2008 run on a Microsoft® Vista™ 64-bit Operating System?

Answer:

Microsoft® Vista™ x64 is supported from SW2008 SP3.1 onward only

Thanks all.

Yea, I called down to tech support last week and they sent me a copy of the latest software (i had originally received SW2008 before 3.1, which is why i had nothing that would load on the vista OS).

Works well now :)!

On a new Vista box, spec's shown below.

A 53 MB drawing took 19 minutes 21 seconds to open from company network folder.

To open the same 53 MB drawing from my local 2 raid hard drive it took 25 minutes.
I tried it again from my local drive, over 21 minutes.

I downloaded the "SolidWorks 2009 Pre-Release 2 XP and Vista - 64 bit" SolidWorks professional, size 1.46GB from the SolidWorks website. At 99% in 2 hours 12 minute.

As a little history as to what has happened since starting the Vista Box.

9/3/2008 SolidWorks crashed 2 times.
9/3/2008 Blue screen of death once, late in day.
9/4/2008 SolidWorks crashed closing 610131 drawing I was not saving drawing.
9/4/2008 SolidWorks locked up 2 times.
