I have a Dell Dimension XPS T450 computer running Win98. I have 256 MB Ram currently installed and a 3dfx Voodoo 3000 Graphics card. When I have been working in solidworks99 v313 for a while my system resources get eaten up, until inevitably I have a system crash. Can anyone offer any suggestions on how to prevent these crashes?

Here are a few suggestions:

1) Specify the Virtual Memory settings to a minimum of 3 times your RAM and a maximum of 4 times your RAM (min 768, max 1024)
2) The Voodoo3 3000 card is posted on the SolidWorks website as having an issue similar to what you describe. The way to avoid this is to decrease the "Hardware Acceleration" in Control Panel, System, Device Manager, Graphics. At least until 3dfx comes out with new drivers to address the issue.
3) I don't know if this is applicable to you, but Windows NT is much more stable than Windows 98. Especially when considering a memory intensive program such as SolidWorks. Windows NT is proven to be a much better resource manager.
I hope you find this helpful!!!

Thank you. this is the first helpful advice i have gotten on this issue.
usually when running solidworks i exit the program and re-enter
to "reboot" my memory.
i tried everything that you suggested--it didnt help. still have the same
problem with win 98/solidworks memory management problems.
thanks

We had the same types of memory problems and switched to NT 4.0 Service Pack 6. Lots of work to switch over (all apps had to be reloaded as we decided it was going to be cleaner to start from scratch). So far so good, much more stable platform.

I found out on ZDnet a utility called Rampage that will refresh your ram and page file. It sits in your System tray and uses very little system resources it will free up ram just by double clicking it.

Cheers Dennis

is it possible to convert solidworks features into catia features with a program,

Do you want to use SoldiWork models in Catia, or Catia models in SolidWorks?

Either way, IGES is probably the file format of choice for this, or STEP. "Happy the Hare at morning for she is ignorant to the Hunter's waking thoughts."
