sorry, i am a newbie to solidworks and this may seem extremely elementary. i am doing an assembely and i have to modify some of my dimensions to make them smaller/bigger and i can't for the life of myself figure out how to EDIT DIMENSIONS!!!! i spent 1.5 hours last night looking through the help tutorials with no answers. any help would be greatly appreciated.

thanks,

andrew

You have to change the model or if you have a distance mate in an assembly you have to change that to get it to update in the drawing.

If you used the dimensions from the model or assembly in your drawings (black dimensions) you would be able to change them from the drawing and the models would update. ONLY if when you install SW you allowed this feature to install. If you have (Grey Dimensions) then those are reference dimensions, and you will have to use the first answer I gave you to get them to update.

I hope that helps, Scott Baugh, CSWP [spin] [americanflag]

is there a way to just change the numerical dimensions with a double-click or something of that nature? the CAD program that my step-dad uses seems much easier to change the dimensions. say for example he want to change the diameter of a circle all he does is double click the value and insert his new value and thats it. i kinda understand what you were saying, but not really all of it. anyways thanks for the help...

If your in the model...just highlight or double click the sketch (if you haven't editted the sketch already) and double click dimension and put in the new value.

You know since your a newbie you should really do the online tutorial...that will help you understand what you need to do and probably help you understand what it is i'm saying.

Once you undestand SW and its lingo you'll find using SW is pretty easy and you'll probably like it to.

There are several ways to edit a dimension:
- in the feature tree, right click in Annotations an toggle to show or not the dimensions (I personally don't like this because we can easily have to much information on screen, which is confusing)
- in the feature tree, doble click on the feature to change or in its sketch
- edit a sketch

Once you have the desired dimention on screen, doble click on top of the number (check that the cursor as changed and there is a red rectangle on the number) and you can change the value.

SBaugh is right: although user friendly you should invest more time learning SW.

Andrew,
SBaugh is right about going through the tutorial. I help new employees here at work learn SolidWorks on a part time bases. Those who go through the tutorial need very little training. Those who know it all and do not go through the tutorial always say, “2D AutoCAD is so much easier, why are we not using AutoCAD?” It is difficult to compare a software program that you are trying to learn from an online manual, with a real live person sitting right there showing you the mouse clicks on a program that they know very well. Please do not give up on SolidWorks; it is a CAD program well worth learning.
