At my company, we are undergoing a swap from AutoCAD to 3D. Our entire library is made up of .dwgs and we still want to keep using these until the 3D library is 100% complete (which will take a few years).

Is there any programs that you can use that convert solidworks drawings into dwg's in such a way the sheet format becomes paper space and the actual drawing goes into model space.

Or as a company, are we better at looking @ using Inventor for a CAD solution? I know that there is a link between inventor and AutoCAD but I really hate using inventor from a 3d perspective (personal opinion).

What are your thoughts?

Either way you look at it, it's not a clean cut transition. I have always found it easier to bring in the ACAD drawing format and make a template out of it for future dwgs. Then take prints of the ACAD dwgs and recreate the parts/assys in SolidWorks (or any other 3D CAD), then create the drawings with the templates. To me this is the easiest and quickest way.

If you plan to convert all the drawings produced from the 3D package into dwg, you will never be rid of the dwg's. Plus you will be spending (wasting) time producing the dwg's, and that time would be better used converting them into 3D.

Many company's implement a plan where dwg's are converted on an as needed basis. As long as ACAD is available it will continue to be used as a crutch ... "because it's quicker/easier".

eDrawings or DWGeditor can be used to open ACAD dwg's.

All I can say is...move forward not backward.

Maybe Inventor is a better option for your company. The software has come a long way in the past 3 years.
