For about 6 months SWx has, at various times, been freezing during use. There doesn't seem to be a rhyme or reason as
to when it will happen. I could be in part mode or assembly mode. For instance, I'll click on the button to complete
an extrude and the program will just freeze. The next step would be to close the program, clean out the temp folder, restart
the computer. I'll go to do the same extrude and all works fine.

I recently thought if I removed all SWx programs (I had 2014 on the computer and running 2015) and associated files, removed the SWx registries, and started over, I might
remove some bug. I did just that and installed 2016 a few days ago. Everything was going well, but then the freeze occurred once today.

So now I'm thinking maybe it's my computer system or my computer system and the way SWx interact with each other. Would anyone have
any thoughts about this freezing issue. I'm using Windows 7 professional, an Nvidia 2000 graphics card and the driver is up to date.
16 megs of ram. An @Xi workstation. I'm now at the point of thinking of wiping the computer clean, reinstalling everything. Any thoughts
would be appreciated.

Thanks.

The CPU may be overheating and restricting it's voltage to protect itself. Install & run a temperature sensing utility like Core Temp or HWMonitor or similar.

Were you running SW15-SP5? That SP supposedly fixed some instability problems.
There were also a couple of Windows updates which caused instability. They are mentioned in this forum and on the SolidWorks forum, and should be uninstalled.

SP5 has made a difference in 2015, but I still get random problems and crashes. One that is a major nuisance for me is the fact when I try to select more than one item in the FM tree and I sit there for 30-40 seconds waiting for it to select the net item. You can imagine what that feels like when I select a tree of items... arghh!!

My belief is there is Video card\driver issue that has not been found yet or been proven. My guess is your having the same sort of freezes. Your doing something in the graphics area or in the FM tree and it just stops responding to windows. (Common issue in SP4). SW 2016 is still far to new to try and compare it against 2015. I would remove that and stay with SW 2015 SP5 until 2016 gets up a few SP's.

Check your Event logs and that might help determine the problem. Also turn off the Optimus in your Bios. That will cause you a lot of problems using Nvidia cards. Check your SW performance log. Search for "return value 3" and "Dump", that should give you more information on where or even what happen at the crash.

Hope that helps,

Are you working over a network or local? We have seen a lot of freezing/crashing issues that were caused by intermittent connection to our license server and network directories.

Thank you for the suggestions and follow up. I've been reading up on the GDi objects limit and am
thinking maybe those limitations and/or settings may play a part in the freezing i'm experiencing.
Yesterday I changed two settings from 2700 objects to 20,000 (under the 65000 maximum permitted).
Will see if that resolves anything. Will report back.
BTW... the computer is a stand alone system, not running over network.
