I have a dxf file that is made up of thousands of small straight lines, I would like to make it out of several lines instead of several thousand. Is there a quick way to convert all the small lines to longer ones or do I have to redraw it? I have solidworks and draftsight to work with.

Difficult to say for sure without an attachment
However I had a similar case when I brought a cam profile into SW
In a new part open the dxf as a 2D sketch
exit the sketch and open a new one on the same plane
Select the dxf and go to select a polyline that should join all the dxf points into 1 continous line

Hope this helps but if this does not work try posting an example as a attachment.

I have worked on some versions of Autocad that had a command called "Overkill" for that exact purpose. It eliminated overlapping lines, joined adjacent lines, joined adjacent polylines, eliminated extraneous points and non-connected short lines. That might be an option for you.
