I was wondering if anyone else noticed a slowness with thier network while using SolidWorks. We use Novell and at always seems sluggish.

I believe it to be our network because when one of us is saving it takes much much more time for another user to create a new part using our part templates which located on the network.

For the most part, all users use their local drive for their work in progress. About 80% of our assembly's, drawings and parts are located on our local drive. The other 20% of our parts that make up our assemblies are located on the network - these are feature palette parts.

When loading assemblies we notice the local drive parts load quickly but the network parts load very slowly.

There is an area there that talks about Novell Networks. Which by the way, Novell Network is not recommended by SW. Windows networks are.

I'm aware Novell is not recommended. I've mentioned this to our IS department and they say we are moving to the Windows netork this year. However they say don't expect it to be better and count on it being worse. I don't beleive their comment on it being worse - I think their oppinion has more to do with our headquarters telling them this is the way its going to be and I don't think they like being told of change.

Anyway, thanks for your comment.

It may well be that your IS dept is upset because of being told to change, but it's more likely that they know that a basic Windows Network can be managed by an averaqe, computer savvy Joe, especially with XP on the scene. Their Novell "Black Magic" spells & "Voodoo" chants will not be needed ... as much. Their comfortable "nest" is being dismantled.

We had problems with our network. I pointed out to IS dept that data cables can not be side-by-side with power cables...too much interference. This is common with a lot of companies. They are looking into moving the cables.

Hi,

I just read about your issues and sympathize. You're actually parrotting something that we went through a few years back at the company I used to work at. They had (and probably still have) a Novell setup that they were forcing to somehow coexist with Windows.

Anyhow based on that experience, the bottom line is that it is 99.99% certain that Novell is at the root of your performance issues. They attempted a couple of different things to alleviate the problem and only really ever achieved partial success by switching those of us using SW to a dedicated network switch (or other similar piece of hardware). The question was brought up back then as well as to why we were running a Windows network. This question was met with similar angst as mentioned here by others.

As an aside the company I work for now has a Windows network and performs very well in comparison to my previous experience with Novell performance.

Good Luck!
