solidworks on windows 7 4

I am trying hard to buy a laptop, on which I want to install SW2006. The problem , as I understand it, is new systems come with Windows7 64 bit OS. Can anyone assure me 32 bit software will run on this platform(64 bit OS). Read a lot with opinions on both sides. Also read about compatability mode(?) for Win7, but tech guy at store said not all Win7 OS come with this capability? Really need laptop and SW2006.
Any thought would be appreciated.

32 bit software can run on a 64 bit OS. I've only run across a few instances where that wasn't true, mostly with home baked software written by specific companies for their product, sizing programs and the like. I do know that SW does say that 2006 is not compatible with Windows 7 and I doubt will support you if you have any problems with it. I could be wrong, but it may even refuse to install. Not sure about that one.

I agree with Joe, I think you'll have problems, assuming 06 actually loads. Maybe you can find a copy of XP Pro to use on the new laptop?

I see that you have SW2007, but perhaps this gives you some insight. Recently I tried to install SW2010 on my new Win7Pro-64 box. I mistakenly inserted the DVD for 32-bit SW. Win7Pro-64 immediately refused to install SW2010 32-bit. Perhaps it can be done, but I didn't pursue it.

If you want to run SW2006, I'd stay with XP. This might influence your laptop purchase, but maybe you can still get one that runs XP. I'd make sure you have the correct video card & driver combo too.

If this is going to work you will need Windows 7 Premium version to set 32-bit compatibility mode.

Dell still sells new computers with an XP 'downgrade'. You might want to check out what they have to offer.

Windows 7 compatibility mode is not designed to function with graphically intensive software (i.e. Photoshop, CAD/CAM software).

This doesn't mean they all don't "work" but if you asked any windows tech they would advise against it.

For windows 7 you need SW2010 or just get a free downgrade to XP as suggested by previous posts.

I agree SolidWorks in XP Compatibility mode will be painful to work on.

The graphics response is very slow for a program like SW.
