I am trying to trim two overlapping surfaces - I trim the first without a problem, but on trying to trim the remaining portion of the second surface get the message 'cannot partition surface, trim tool and target do not intersect'. How can I get round this - as far as I can see they must intersect, since I just used the intersection between the two to perform the first trim.

Thank you for any help.

Make a copy of te cutting surface. Then extend the edges, so that they are beyond those of the surface to be trimmed. Use the extended copy as a cutting tool. If there is a problem then extend edges of the surface to be cut as well.

You are getting the "... do not intersect" message because after you have trimmed the first surface, it no longer truly intersects (crosses through) the other one. It merely touches it.

Perhaps an Enhancement Request is in order.

Most likely the problem is that your trimming surface doesn't completely run the length of your desired surface to trim. So PlasticFantastic's solution should work for you.

You can also select the Mutual option to save a step, as long as your surfaces qualify.

Reason trumps all. And awe trumps reason.

What about "mutual trim" instead of using one as a tool to cut and then using the other?

Just keep in mind that "mutual trim" will knit the two trimmed surfaces together.
