I don't ever remember hearing such things happening through the 1960's to the 1990's.
This is very dangerous, I hope it all gets sorted soon.
It sounds like a materials issue of some sort.

We didn't have YouTube from the 1960's to the 1990's.

No, no vehicle manufacturer has ever accidentally put a critical defect in their vehicles before the year 2000.

LionelHutz, that loud "OW OW OW!" you hear is me hurting from falling on the floor laughing at your spot-on comment!!!

My wife and I found out years later that the first car we bought together had above average potential to kill us. We bought a Ford Pinto. My wife liked the color, haha. I only bought the darn thing because in 1974 some idiot slid through a stop sign on wet leaves and totaled my 1969 Pontiac Firebird with a (I was told when I bought it, anyway) 1965 389 cubic inch GTO engine dropped in. That sucker would move, but it could not predict and avoid the idiot that day.

Do I miss it much? Oh yea...but truthfully, having my wife at my side for the last 48 years is still a much better outcome for my life!

GregLocock:

Fascinating information, I had never heard of these reviews that occurred years later when more accurate data about the Ford Pinto became available. Thanks for pointing me to those links. I am about halfway through the Rutgers Law Review, and already I can see where I was simply parroting "conventional wisdom".

Are you trying to avoid taking sleeping meds debodine?

I will send you the airlaw stuff once you finish that if you want.

IMOP I would put the truck problem on an off shore supply deal. That is usually the main cause of many automotive parts problems now. We didn't have that problem in the 50's to 70's, and is why class 8 trucks were not losing steering linkage in those days. If a person was into a subject in the days of no internet, there where plenty of ways to keep up on the related topics.

Out of curiosity I did a quick search on NHTSA's site for steering system recalls 1970-1980. Data prior to 1970 is scarce, prob bc NHTSA was formed in 1970. Note, I haven't used their system in years and in certain circumstances recalls will actually be listed under the component supplier rather than the OEM, so I prob missed a LOT. :p

PACCAR brands had steering recalls in 1971, 72, 73, 74, 76, 78, and 79.

Mack had steering recalls every year from 1970-1980. Volvo only had one that I was able to locate in 1980.

Where's the data?
---------------------
It is where any such data like that is.
Locked up in company eyes only files.
IMOP - opinion

CWB1 did it give the reason? Broken ball joints? Broken bolts? No aligned correctly?

Boy, I really wanted a Cosworth Vega back in those days.

The problem with sloppy work is that the supply FAR EXCEEDS the demand

I am always opening to learning and I would be delighted to follow any links you provide.

Oh look, data.

Turns out everything didn't suddenly go to shit in 1999.
