Hello,

I am a civil engineer with years of experience in building design and mainly concrete high rise.
I have been offered a position involves extensive industrial structural design such as metal loading platform, sheet metal design for connections and welding for storage racks and shelfs.

Do you recommend any references books, guidelines or sources to get more knowledge in similar designs as I find them different form structural steel structures design?

Thanks

There are several books by Omer Blodgett, namely: “Design of Weldments” and “Design of Welded Structures,” pub. by Lincoln Arc Welding Foundation. These two are very good and inexpensive. Various Steel Design Manuals, and AWS Welding codes for general steel and welding design methods, etc.; some good Engineering Mechanics, Strength of Materials texts, maybe some Machine Design texts, Roark’s “Stress and Strain book, etc. The structures and details are slightly different, just keep your eyes open when you are in a shop or plant, but the general engineering concepts, analysis and design methods really don’t change, they apply to every structure or machine. Loads are different, OSHA is involved and for a lot of the stuff there really is no specific code to guide/dictate to you, you are kinda back to basic engineering principles and good engineering judgement and experience.
