How do I determine the space between indepentant cooling tower cells? Is there a standarized space? What are the limiting factors? If there is not standardized space, how do i calculate it?

The following information describes the cooling tower in question.

7 independant cells
Cross Flow
Induced draft
PVC film fill

900 GPM TOTAL
136 MBTU/H TOTAL

Thank you all ahead of time for your help

The manufacturer of the cooling tower usually gives required clearances on all side of the cooling tower based upon the design and airflow patterns. They also give generalized recommendations.

For BAC cooling towers this is available at and choose "layout guidelines".

For Evapco cooling towers this is available at and choose "equipment layout".

I am sure other manufacturers have their own publications.

there may also be additional space requirements based on avoiding "interference", ie, re-entrainment of the plume caused by a tall building being upwind of the tower. Height of nearest builiding and prevailing windspeed may affect required spacing.

3D cfd computer models may now simulate typical wind profiles and advise impact on tower re-entrainment.
