Spacing of Laterals, Etc. from Stormwater Infiltration Bed 1

Hello, All.

I'm working on a stormwater infiltration bed for a proposed single residence.

We don't have a lot of room, and the bed will take up a good portion of the front yard. I'm having a hard time locating the sanitary lateral and utility connections.

Are there any guidelines on the minimum distance between sanitary lines and stormwater seepage beds? Is there a common way to address situations where the minimum distance can't be provided, such as sleeving or encasement?


We may need to bring the gas, electric and communication directly across the yard over top of the bed. (There's 2 feet of cover over the bed.) Are there any guidelines that would address this situation?

Is this just a large drywell type of installation? Sanitary has to go gravity. The main in the street will dictate that. Water, gas, elec. and comm lines can go any where as long as the water doesn't freeze.

You are correct – the sanitary lateral will be gravity flow.

It will traverse the front yard, connecting the house to the sewer main in the street. The only problem is that the stormwater seepage bed (which could be described as a large drywell) takes up most of the front yard. The sanitary lateral will have to go in next to it. Do you know if there are any guidelines out there about how far apart the lateral would need to be spaced away from the seepage bed?

Water lines and sewage lines have a min. separation. 10 feet I think. If there is a local storm drain and sewage separation, that would govern. Call the local people for advice. you better hope that the soil will take all this rain water or you will be making a very soggy yard.

thats 10' separation between water and sanitary sewage. typically storm drains are not considered for the 10 foot separation. If you insist on running the sanitary or water lines through the bed, you might consider sleeving, encasement or restrained joints. Those pipes may settle and this would reduce leakage.

Please note that most agencies require 10' clearance and this typically applies to main lines. Correct me I misunderstood you Cieg22 but it sounds like you are dealing with service laterals since you are only dealing with one house. When it comes to service laterals, you can go as much as 5' between water and sewer and typically you try to put the water service on the high side of the lot. This of course, taking into consideration local requirements and your gravity connection for the sewer service. As for other utilites, electric, gas, etc they can be "roped" under and over as necessary.

By the way, some agencies also have a 4' clearance requirement from water main or service to storm system components in this case your infiltration bed.

To answer your question, CPENG, these are service laterals. I plan to run water along one side of the bed and the storm/sanitary along the other side. I was considering taking the other utility connections directly over the bed.

I apologyze for the delay in my follow up. Sounds like you have your lay out figured out. I must say I agree with CVG, you may want to consider encasement or sleeving if the water and other utilties have less than the required clearance to the bed. By the way, is your storm and sewer going out in the same pipe? - just curious. I only asked because I rarely deal with that scenerio in my geographic area or at least in the projects I work on.
