Spandrel Panel Connection

Hi,

We've been tasked with providing a new connection where a section of the existing spandrel panel is to be removed to provide access to a new, adjacent stair tower. The connection will need to be anchored into the 9"-wide cut face of the spandrel panel. Given the narrow section and factored vehicle bumper loading, we are having trouble with an a post-installed anchorage using commercially-available software. Concrete blowout in shear is the issue.

You are saying that you are analyzing the existing spandrel panel to act for any bumper load as this new cut out piece, and then can follow a load path to the new blue anchor but are having problems? I would be surprised that a bumper load away from the picture would travel to the new connection with the notch in the spandrel. If the spandrel has to act in bending to carry its own weight it seems problematic as well.

Is the new stair tower only part of the existing spandrel panel bay? Could the spandrel panel be tied back to the new stair shaft? Could it be eliminated completely such that the new stair shaft works for the bumper loads?
