Hi there

Can anyone provide a wiring diagram to generate a pulse in an ignition coil so that one spark plug can be fired, without an ignition module for a HT lead bench test for example?

Cheers

I don't know of a diagram but if you wire up the coil to a battery pos to one side and neg to the other with a switch it will work just fine if only one spark is all you need. Don't leave the current flowing for too long or you will crater the coil. Hook up a dist to a drill motor---Good lord, there are all kinds of odd ball ways of doing it.
What the heck are you after?

You could use a 555 timer circuit to generate an oscillating voltage signal, perhaps with a relay to switch the current on and off.

Sounds like a radio noise generator to me.

Hiya

Cheers for the reply, the reason why i ask is i've seen these kits for making flames come out of the exhaust on a car when the car is on overun, however these kits cost alot, so i was just wondering how it could be done without going to the expence of buying a kit.

cheers

What I said is exactly what I did in MY 1949 Mercury back in the 50's. A sparkplug and a coil with a SPST switch on the underside of the dash. Just rev it up, pull the choke closed and flip the switch on and off a few times. What are we doing hear? Reliving our childood?

Hiya

Excuse my ignorance but what does SPST stand for?
I think the 555 option is very good but a little over the top for this application.
I was just curious, to see how other people would go about it!

Thanx

single pole, single throw. A 555 is probably the absolute simplest method of obtaining a regularly oscillating voltage signal with a desired frequency. Perhaps posting this question (or better yet, a link to it) in an EE forum would yield more input?

alternatively,
(see Capacitor Discharge Ignition Circuit)

basically the same thing I was suggesting, with instructions:

Cheers, thought it was something like that. Thanks for the links ivymike.
Perhaps this would be the best way!

Don't tell me all the old T Ford trembler coils have been used up?
Just rembering the old blue flame wars.
Harvey.
