I have the following questions on info in the CalTrans T&S Manual. Please answer if you can. Thank you.
1) Pages 6-24, 8-5 state "surcharge pressures can be added directly to the soil diagram or may be drawn separately." Example 8-1, page 8-8 says "the surcharge can't be handled in the usual manner...an equivalent Hs will be calculated and added to the existing H." Why in this particular case can't a surcharge pressure of Ka*q be used?
2) Example 8-3, page 8-19: why is the surcharge pressure dissipated to zero at depth D?
3) Page 9-11, figure 9-6 offers a simple global stability check procedure for tieback systems in clay. Is there a similar simple stability check for cantilever systems in clay? If so, what publication outlines this?
