I am specifying and designing stainless steel in an ornamental stair. Per the architectural requirements, the stringers are to be stainless steel tube members, currently detailed at 12 inches deep and 4 inches wide (subject to change per my design). I've seen that ASTM A 276 appears to be the standard specification for stainless steel bars and shapes, however it's not clear to me whether tubes fall under this category or not (there is an ASTM A 554 for Welded Stainless Steel Mechanical Tubing).
I'm also trying to determine what the appropriate yield strength would be for design. I'm under the impression that type 304 is the most common, which has a yield strength of 30 ksi.
I feel like I'm all over the place with the information I've gathered, and would like clarification anyone may be able to give. Thanks
