Spent resin treatment/processing in US

vsimonis requested info re this thread. As a retired Corporate Radiation Safety Officer for a major radioactive waste disposal facility, I hope these comments will help. Nuclear facilities in the US do send their spent resins to disposal. To my knowledge, they are shipped as soon as possible. The facility I worked for placed a radioactive dose rate limit of 80 mr/hr at contact on the container. That limit was set to protect workers in the portion of the facility who worked on the blending/solidification process prior to disposal.

One option in the UK that I have seen is the use of hydrogen peroxide to destroy the resin to CO2 and water.

Once the resin is destroyed the residual waste can be volume reduced. The waste is then solidified in grout and stored as ILW waste. I can point you to some web sites if you are interested?
