Now days, can we still say that Split case vertically mounted pumps are easier to be maintained over the vertical in-line pumps.
What are the other advantages and disadvantages which allow you determining which is better for your application?
Application: Chilled water systems

Why can we say that?
What size pump units are you thinking about - 1Kw or 500Kw

I am talkilng about 200 kw and above.
Why we can say that, for example, to remove the impeller in the split case vertically mounted pumps you don't have to remove the motor unlike the vertical inline where you have to remove the motor. Also for the bearing/seal maintenance you had to do the same. Now, new designs permit fully access for bearing/seal without removing the motor.

When you say vertical inline - do you mean vertical line shaft drive units, ie, turbine type pumps or vertical mounted back-pullout overhung impeller design.

However, for a well engineered pump of any configuration, how often would you envisage having to change bearings and seals and, if pump bearings have reached the end of their operating life, certainly the motor bearing must also be due for change which would require the removal of the motor anyway.

In my opinion the advantages of the vertical inline pump over Split case vertically mounted pumps are
1) Direct installation in the pipeline,so minimal space required
2) No alignment of pump and driver
3) No baseplate, coupling or guard

Disadvantages:limited to weight of the motor drive

sometimes the price is a big advantage for vertical line pump, split case vertical often is expensive, especially for small capacity.

Disadvantages of vertically-mounted split-case over conventional horizantal mounting or vertical in-line pumps:

1. Thrust bearings required
2. Overhead crane not much use for lifting out "top"
casing,impeller-shaft assembly, and other
components. Special forklift or horizontal rig
required.
