I'm currently going to be using a new molecular beam epitaxy system, and the sample mounting procedure involves spot welding tantalum wires to a steel sample mount. The wires hold up small substrates with a mass of only a few grams.

I've never spot welded, and wondered what considerations need to be taken for welding these two materials together.

Also, I need to buy a spot welder for the lab, any have suggestions on where to look?

Here is a little information on welding Ta to CS. I would give both Miller and Sunstone a call. Depending on your required sizes heat input and pressure will need closely control. I think equipment from Sunstone should do the job.
Welding Ta can get to be a pain in you know where.
