Spring/Ball Plungers

What kind of examples are there of situations where you would use a spring plunger (with the longer nose) instead of a ball plunger?

In my online searching I've noticed that there are various types of plungers and I was curious if there are any specific situations where you say "well you definitely need to use a ball plunger here."

Well, if using for a detent where you need more travel you'd need the longer nose version.
