Spring charging motor on 11kV Circuit breaker

We have a circuit breaker with 110DC spring charging motor. It is to be used in a switchboard where the the supply is 220VAC. Can we use an industrial type converter (220Vac-110Vdc) of suitable rating to supply power to the charging motor,instead of replacing the motor itself.

My opinion it is you can. But the problem will be how to trip if you have not 220 V to supply. You need another source of reliable 110 V DC [usually a battery charged from a suitable charger].

Yes and No. THe 110VDC motor is likely a series motor, and if so it will also work on AC but only 110V, not 220V. Now, what about the tripping and closing coils, likely only DC. What is the application, how many breakers are involved, is this new or some old installation being modified, etc....Likely you will not get around the need for a battery system and charger.

Not to mention the auxiliary supply needed for protection equipment.

From a utility perspective we would always want to be able to open and close circuit breakers without mains voltage being present, so Scada, protection and control systems are always dc. It begs the bigger question as to why you want to use 220V AC for an essential operating supply.

Best just to swap the motor, but we need some more info as others have mentioned about the trip and close coils, I would suspect your gear uses a cap trip if you are using AC controls.

What is the breaker type? A photo of the nameplate would be helpful here.

If we are talking about only the closing spring charging motor, I think I'd be OK with use of a 220 V ac to 110 V dc supply. But the tripping circuit is more of a concern. I would not want to rely on a power supply to provide tripping power. You would need some type of capacitive trip device if relying on ac power for closing and tripping.

This is also going to depend on how critical the circuit is.

What David saied.
Spring charging motor isnt issue, possible use some convertor, possible use some step-down transformer 220/60-63V and diode bridge.
We have a lot of application were motor is feeded by 220V AC and trip and close coils from 110-220V DC.

Capacitive device is good solution too, if feeded from UPS and CT, or from VT and CT.
