I generally stay as far away as possible from any light fixtures but I'm working on a project where things are cramped and I'm wondering how to approach proximity to track lights in a kitchen for a NFPA #13 (2010) system. If I use the 4X rule x the largest dimension of the light (which would be the light itself and not the track) I'm looking at about 24" (max 36" per 8.10.6.2.1.3). Is this generally the approach you guys take with this or is there some other exception where I can get closer?

What edition are you using????

Did you check 6.8.1.5.3.4?????

And it is at least three feet

Pendent sprinklers shall be located at least 3 ft from obstructions such as ceiling fans and light fixtures

A) Pendent sprinklers shall be located at least 3 ft from obstructions such as ceiling fans and light fixtures unless the requirements of 6.8.1.5.3.4 are met.” and “(B) The distance shall be measured from the center of the sprinkler to the center of the obstruction.” This new wording provides clear guidance but is not yet in effect for your application. Thus if you meet the 2002 edition application for obstructions, you met the intent of the standard.

sorry was thinking 13R system:::

2007::

6.8.1.5.3.2 Pendent Sprinklers.

(A) Pendent sprinklers shall be located at least 3 ft (914 mm) from obstructions such as ceiling fans and light fixtures unless the requirements of 6.8.1.5.3.4 are met.

(B) The distance shall be measured from the center of the sprinkler to the center of the obstruction.

(C) Where the sprinkler cannot be located 3 ft (914 mm) from the obstruction (as measured from the center of the obstruction), an additional sprinkler shall be located on the other side of the obstruction.

(D) Where the area of the fan blades encompasses more than 50 percent of the area of the plan view, the sprinkler shall be installed in accordance with 6.8.1.5.3.4.

it in the 2010 nfpa 13R::

6.4.6.3.2 Pendent Sprinklers.

6.4.6.3.2.1 Pendent sprinklers shall be located at least 3 ft (914 mm) from obstructions such as ceiling fans and light fixtures unless the requirements of 6.4.6.3.4 are met.
