Does someone know how to calculate a square flange with 04 bolts ?
ASME VIII-I Appendix 2 is intended for circular flanges. I don't find recommandations for using square flange.
Flange is made with forged stainless steel (304L) and assembled with 4 bolts ½" B16 and nuts grade 4. Flanges have #1500 class and worked with steam.
Perhaps, the appropriate design is doing the burst test !
What do you think ?

Square flanges are not allowed under ASME VIII coverage.
Moreover their behaviour is completely different with respect to ring flanges and so is the calculation procedure.
Unless of course you can calculate a ring flange that is totally included in your square flange. prex

A.E.Blach, "Bolted Flanged Connections for Non-Circular Pressure Vessels," ASME PVP??, pp.97-104 [1980's]
has a way to get an equivalent circular flange based on the Z factors of UG-34. [get an equivalent ID based on Z, then add cross-section dims to get OD/BCD/G, etc...

There's also the SAE Rectangular Hydraulic Flanges for high pressures.

abbver98,

Non-circular pressure flanges with circular bore
are designed based on an equivalent circular flange.
See Appendix 2 of Sect. V111 Div 1, Section 2-10 for
the procedure of determining the O.D. and B.C.D. of
the equivalent circular flange.

BTW, ASME Section V111, Div. 1 have never prohibited
the use of non-circular flanges in pressure vessels,
unless there's a new addendum to the code.
