Square vs. Round Wire Torsion Spring 1

Can anyone tell me if there is a benefit to using square wire, as opposed to round wire, for a large torsion spring?

I need to replace some damaged springs (square wire), but can't locate a manufacturer who can build them. I am told that a round wire type can be readily produced. I understand the overall dimensions will change with a round wire type, but am curious if there is a specific reason why square wire would be chosen over round wire.

For this particular design (coils touching), the square shape increases the wire sectional area for a given width compared with circular wire. Larger sectional area decreases stresses and increases spring constant.

Square or rectangular wire is much more difficult to procure than round wire. Associated Spring or Peterson Spring may be able to produce the current design if you want to keep it.
