Hi,
I have a problem and hope you can help me, I am looking to what material should be a straight knurled pin that needs to be press fit into a hole of a shaft made of SS 303. Current material of pin asks for the same material 303 but the knurl of the pin does not cut or makes interference on the hole (the pin is installed using a press), the knurl comes flat after some use of the shaft.
Any help on orientation on this is good.
Thank you.

Use a harder grade of material(PH steels) for the pin material,so that the knurl does not flatten out.

Any PH grade, 17-4, 17-7, 15-5
Heat treat to a lower strength condition (higher aging temp such as 1050 or 1100), they will still be a lot harder than your shaft alloy.

Any reason not to use a standard commercial, straight dowel pin? These are typically cold-rolled material to get the strength and hardness up. If the idea is to retain the pin more or less permanently, a smooth-surface interference fit will hold up better than a knurled one.
