SS304 with bleach?

I'm interested in how I would prove that putting a .5 to 1% solution of sodium hypochlorite on 304 stainless steel for about 2-3 hours per month (CIP process) is not going to significantly affect the material.

I can look up chemical compatability charts, but I would like to know how this information was derived, etc... I appreciate the help.

You are right, the SS304 will not be affected in any way in looong time by putting 1% sodium hypocholrite on it, for years, even at higher rate than you said. Tell anybody that I told you so. To prove it, keep in your office a piece of SS304, 1 mm thick plate, say 4"x4". Put on it every day few drops of the hypochlorite solution and let it dry. Next day wash the plate, dry it then put few more drops of hypochlorite. And so on until your 79th birthday. However, if you try the same on a SS304 bolt tensioned in an assembly, it will crack in few weeks, at the best. The Chloride induced Stress Corrosion Cracking requires the contaminated part to be under some mechanical stress, unlike your plate sitting pretty on your desk. I'm sure you have seen sufficient literature in regard of limits for Chlorides solution concentration, temperature, PH exposure, etc...for Austenitic Stainless Steels subjected to mechanical stress.

But, if you put drops of solution on a plate and let them dry, and you don't wash it off each time, then within a few weeks you will have some significant pitting. As long as you don't have crevices and it will get washed off you should be fine.

Thanks guys... I guess what I'm looking for is literature in regards to limits for chloride solution concentration for austenitic stainless steel.

Something about the authority of print will work better for me than gr2vessels said so. Its interesting how much time I spend documenting things that should be common knowledge. I don't spend a lot of time with materials of construction stuff so I kind of go by the seat of my pants. In this case I need some kind of literature, or I will likeley be using 316 SS for no good reason....
