Hi,

I am trying to determine how to apply the use of a wrought stainless steel (316/316L) pipe cap in Section V111 Div 1. I have looked at UG-11 and UG-44 which reference ASME B16.9 for Wrought Steel fittings, but as I see it, the appropriate spec for wrought stainless fittings is SP-43-1991. This is not referenced in the code as far as I can see. How do I determine how to use a wrought stainless pipe cap for a pressure vessel?

Thanks,
Bob

Standard fitting do not require calculations, but you can consider it a 2:1 ellip head and calculate it the same.

As I understand the question, you are using the pipe cap for a boiler end or head.
If used for head or shell of a boiler or major part of the boiler pressure vessel will require calculations.
If the cap is an SE or similar shape, it could be calculated accordingly. Look at the specifications on wrough
fittings for the maximum pressure and temp. for the particular fitting.(ASME/ANSI Stds)

I mentioned boiler pv but it is the same for
Sec VIII-1 for pressure vessels.

Thanks to all that have posted. I was not aware that the shape of these fittings would lend itself so well to analysis. I assume from what everyone is telling me that the shape of these fittings is either elliptical of F&D. BTW, this is a pressure vessel application which is "designed in accordance with" ASME Sec VIII Div 1 by customer request even though the vessel does not fit the category of an ASME PV as spelled out in the intro to Sec VIII Div 1. I'll check out the supporting standard for the fittings.

Thanks,
Bob
