I am doing the design for the base plate connection of a 20" diameter by 80' high stack. I think it will connect to an NH3 scrubber.

What standard/code covers these types of stacks in Canada/US? Is it 650 or some other? I would typically design the foundation and anchor rods for the building code environmental loads but I'm thinking there may also be vortex shedding loads and loads due to velocity discharge of the stack.

The foundation issues I am familiar with but I may also be asked to design the stack itself and I would like to get up to speed in the meantime. Is it acceptable to design the primary stack structure to loads from the code/standard and then delegate the nozzle and flange design to others?

Thanks in advance.

If you have vortex loads, those are best broken up by von Karmen vortex breakers. I'd suggest you turn the design over to pros. Sub it out to John Zinc Co. Cheaper than making a mistake or two.

Independent events are seldomly independent.

Try ASME STS-1-2011 Steel Stacks and COMPUTER AIDED ANALYSES OF SMOKE STACK DESIGNS by Joseph Charles Servaites Thesis submitted to the Faculty of the
Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in partial fulfillment of the requirement for the degree of MASTER OF SCIENCE in MECHANICAL ENGINEERING September, 1996

I agree that the best course of action would be to get a complete stack estimate from an established firm that designs to ASME STS-1

A design that conforms to the ASME code will mitigate flow induced vibrations. Some companies have patented spring-supported weights mounted at the top of the stack.... just for this purpose

This is one company of many....
