Good morning guys,

what are the best practice while adding shims? In my case, I have a beam structure which will be sitting on HSS. I have to raise the structure by 2in. I could add additional plates (holes in center of plates and then plug welds) but I would like to know how does experienced the professionals deal with such situations?

Why not use a single 2" plate to avoid welding?

I you have to laminate two or more plates, use a BTC-P4 weld around the perimeter.

We want to use the stock material and we don't have 2" plate in stock

Make the lower plate an inch wider and use fillet welds?

@sbi, That is a good idea, I can have a fillet weld all around. But is there any other alternative instead of stacking plates?

HSS2x2 or HSS4x2, or C6x10.5 laid flat. This would warrant some investigation into the loads going through the assembly.

HSS 10x10 and C6 is in bending around strong axis
