Is it common to roll down to .001'' or thinner AIR-MELTED stainless steel foils? We normally use vacuum melting for that thin products.

It seems .001'' SS foils are commercially available. Could potential inclusions from air melting process be a big concern at that thin .001''? Does anyone have experience on that?

The application is greater driver than the thickness. This gage of SS is used for semiconductor carriers, in that they application they want low inclusions and they use remelted material (wither ESR or VAR). AOD material is plenty clean to roll to 0.001" as long as the occasional inclusion does not impact the service.

Thanks Ed! so Arc + AOD .001'' is a common practice? (application allows air-melted product).
Multiple issues such as tearing, shape and surface defects, etc. are my concerns at .001''. Inclusions/pits can cause strip tearing, aggressive grinding could damage the strip profile...... This material is softer than SS, and we never used air-melting to roll down less than .002''. I worry about bringing in more trouble than profit.

I think that this goes back to casting practice and slab conditioning.
If these are not continuous cast then I would use re-melted.
