I'm doing a preliminary budget for a water process facility that will be using fair amount of 2 and 4" ss sanitary tubing.

Does anyone have a few good rules of thumb for estimating stainless butt welding costs for both in the shop and the field?

Thanks

Labor - Figure out the circumferential distance of each butt joint based upon OD. Figure out the number of passes to complete the butt joint and multiply by the circ. This will be the total inches a welder has to "fill". USe 1.5 "/minute for field SMAW (stick) and 2 - 2.5"/min for shop GMAW (MIG) for the labor hours. Multiply by appropriate craft hourly rate for your area. Keep in mind this doesnt include fit up time for the joint.

Material - figure the volume and thus the weight of each weld joint, multiply by 10-15% for loss and get weld wire pricing from your local supplier.

If the wall thickness is < approximately 0.15 inch, autogenous automatic tube welding equipment can be used. Equipment can be purchased or rented from a number of companies. The arc on time for the 2-inch tube is a little over 3 minutes. The tube ends must be machined square.

You will have more time in the cutting, facing, and cleaning than the welding. The machines from AMI or Liburdi make quick work of these autogenous butt welds. What about your rules for ID purge and acceptable weld colors? Better nail that down too. Inspection will cost as well.
