I have some stainless steel exposed to open air in a warm climate that is showing some brown "gunk" similar to iron contamination. I think that the corrosion may be caused from iron containing bacteria on the surface. What dio you think? How can I get rid of this?

Stainless is sometimes a misnomer. Some grades will yield to visible rust.

there is a web site, stainlesssteelcenter.com, that has an expert system for how to clean stainless.
