Stainless Steel Design - Basics 3

Real basic questions here. I have not worked with stainless before and I'm finding it difficult to get design information. Can someone point me in the right direction?

I have a sign (about 4' wide x 8.5' tall) that is supported by two pipes. Wind pressure is about 30psf and it is close to the ocean (marine env). The pipes will have a base plate anchored to a concrete mat. The only information that I have found so far has given me an allowable bending stress of 30ksi for 304 stainless in pipe. I'm assuming that I can just do a straight M/S to check this. What about the base plate - is there a different allowable stress for 304 plates vs pipes? How about welds - is there any reduction in the weld area similar to aluminum design?

Is there a code that covers this?

thanks in advance.

How about a diagram? Do you mean steel poles rather than pipes?
Pipes are for supplying fluids designed for internal pressure mostly.
Poles are structural.
All stainless?

My understanding was that structural pipe was available in stainless with the same designation as standard structural pipe, i.e. 2.5 Schedule 40 etc. etc.

Yes it will all be stainless

Any info on design?

I wouldn't design to 30ksi allowable in stainless.
Some of it yields at 27ksi.

and in some cases 65ksi is the right number. (this is why lean duplex grades are showing up in architecture)
Knowing the alloy, product form, and material specification is important.

If appearance is a consideration; you will be much happier with 316 than 304 in a marine environment.
