Hello ,

We are being asked to install a grab rail for a retirement village.
Only thing is they want it below the water level in their pool for when they do Aqua Aerobics.
I'm aware that 316 doesn't like chlorine is there an alternative alloy ?

Consider 2205 or AL2003. They offer better pitting resistance and much higher strength. And these days they also have favorable economics.
For fully submerged service 316 would probably be OK. The real concern is for places where the material is at the water line. You get some wet-dry concentration effects there and attack would be worse.

Argh. Pool chlorine (hypochlorite) will corrode aluminum rapidly. And the 50xx alloys are much better at resisting marine environments than 6xxx alloys.

How about a plastic? Most are chlorine resistent.

I seem to recall shower/tub grab rails (for the elderly, disabled, etc) that were plastic. Maybe call a tub manufacture and see what they use.

If it is transparent, maybe lucite? Strictly guessing here.
