Hello,
We have a stainless steel rod that goes into a brass hole. We need to investigate the friction that takes place. Could galling be a factor here? I understand that stainless steel has galling problems when used with some metals. The parts are heated up to a temperature of 400-500 degrees F when they are connected also.
Thanks

Need more information to answer your question;
- list the specific grades of brass and stainless steel
- what type of clearance
- loads in service, static or rotating
- environment

- list the specific grades of brass and stainless steel
303 SS and B16 Brass

- what type of clearance
approximately 0.0077

- loads in service, static or rotating
transverse (up and down sliding)

- environment
dry/lubricated with mineral oil

In sliding wear, it would be desirable to have a harder material sliding against a softer material with lubrication. I would recommend using a cold drawn AISI Type 303 stainless steel rod. Cold drawing will increase the surface hardness and strength over annealed AISI type 303 SS.
