I am tasked with recommending the equipment required to set up a PV fabrication workshop, and present budget prices for a workshop which can process:

1- carbon steel and stainless steel vessels.
2-diameters up to 4000mm, and thickness up to 60mm.
3-ability to add all ancillaries e.g pressure and temp. gauges etc.

Can stainless steel be produced using same equipment/bays as carbon steel?if the answer is no,why does st. steel require dedicated bays?
Please suggest equipment list and budget prices for fabricating st. steel PV.

SS can be done in the same area but it is hard. have to wrap plate roll, separate abrasive wheels and mark, keep ss cans swept out, sweep floors more regularly, wrap turning rolls, don't let stainless set on concrete floors. In short, any thing that can press in, or contaminated CS into SS has to be prevented.

Nothing worse than finishing a beautiful SS tower and see rust blooms starting up. You can go over with acid wash but that is a pain in itself. AND no matter what anyone tells you, a brush blast does not remove CS contaminants.

It is better to keep it separate if you can, but not always possible.

just posted prices a week or two ago...see if you can find it. all the equipment is the same. did not go into cranes, building, furnaces.

Thank you so much vesselfab, most helpful answer. I have found your posted equipment budget prices. I have further questions:

1-Can subarc welding manipulator do longitudinal vessel welding as well as circumferential welding or do I require longitudinal seam welding machine?

2- posted price of 500,000K for plate roll, is this for CS only, or price for 2 machines for CS and SS fabrication?

yes...subarc does both long & girth

we use same roll but wrap it so no contamination occurs

Our company purchases SS vessels and some of impressive sizes and we require SS fabrication in segregated areas (of the same building) and the use of segregated tools, equipment, etc as well as special means of protection as vesselfab has mentioned of wrapped rolls where some equipment has to be used on both.

Our specification assumes that "Bubba" won't be paying as much attention as we would like so any measure that insures that when he picks up a tool or piece of equipment (think plate grabs) it will be or will have been only used on Stainless.

As Vesselfab has mentioned, nothing more disheartening than to take all that precaution and the final product shows each location where the plate handling clamps were used to pick up each piece of plate due to the carbon contamination they impressed into the SS.
