I'm not surprised that stainless steel wire rope has magnetic properties, but I can't explain exactly why. How is wire rope made and what kind of cold working processes does it go through that would give it these slight magnetic properties?

This is dependant on chemistry too. 300 series has an Ms [start of martensite transformation] temperature below room temperature but sometimes the Md temperature is just above room temperature.Cold working then transforms some of the austenite to martensite so it becomes slightly magnetic. Common question but many don't know about the Md temperature !!
