Stainless to Carbon steel contact problems? 2

My dear pals

There are so many cases we have to weld or bolt a stainless steel part to carbon steel part

Are there known problems as these two come into contact? No ref I know says anything about this

We have thousands of such combinations of these two materials at the plant site with very few problems.

Here are things to lookout for.

If welded be careful of the difference in thermal expansion of the two materials. It does take much temperature difference if the temperature is cyclic.

Always use stainless clips and brackets on SS vessels and tanks. This is before, during and after fabrication. Always use galvanized steel if possible, watch the temperatures.

Use stainless or galvanized bolts never black iron.

Watch out for places where the CS will rust and stain the Stainless. This will get you in more trouble than a broken part.

Try to always use a transition band of SS on SS vessels and tanks to CS skirts.

These are just a few ideas. The main thing is stop and think about the application. A lot of times carbon steel components are the most expensive way to go.

I am a steel detailer out of oregon, and there is a company called HSI, who does nothing but stainless. Hanset Stainless Inc, they are real bright on stainless and friendly. I bet if you emailed them or called them they can tell you what is going on or what to look for.
