I am analyzing stair stringers as beams spanning between supports to get the sizes. Should the stringers/beams need to be considered as laterally braced as they have threads in between them ?

I generally consider them as laterally braced by the stair treads.

Depends on the type and supporting detail of threads , if the stringers curved or straight etc..Modelling the
stair stringers as beams spanning between supports would be reasonable approach..

I agree with dik. The treads form a sort of vierendeel girder effect with braces the stringers.

See below simple guide

Sorry about the quality dik. Just put it up from the phone today. I’ll upload properly next time I’m at the laptop.

Thanks...

Yeah MIS.. seems like a great resource to have. Please share it if this is a public resource.

MIS... IMHO, the amount of passive restraint to prevent instabilities is very little, and I've never considered stairs to be anything but laterally supported. It is, however, handy to have a document that reflects/confirms the same thoughts.

I'll be honest and admit that I've never really considered this a concern.

Samwise, what are the dimensions of the stringers in question? What is the material being used?

The stringers I have currently are HSS12x4's and I am using Grade B tube sections.

even less of a concern.

AISC Design Guide 34 has some good information about this topic.
