Hi,

OSHA regarding setup- basically use a safety block between ram and base plate.

Best practice in die setup:

1. Check Tool room tag on die to make sure it is ready for use.
2. use die cart to transfer die from rack to press.

3. Position die set under ram

4. lower ram to die set by inching ram

5. secure punch to ram

6. secure die to plate at least in two diagonally opposite places by using bolt and step blocks ( or clamps)
7. set punch shut height
7a. verify alignment with feeder
8. lift punch from die
9. Use crane to position coil in cradle ( check for gage)
10. cut metal straps and remove from coil
11. feed strip through straightener and feeder
12. activate feeder
13. Make a first piece inspection
14. adjust shut height as necessary.
14a.check location of scrap belt or container.
14b.check location of lubricant nozzles
14c.position part basket.
15. contact supervisor to let him know that press is ready to go.
15. contact supervisor and let him or her know that press is ready to go

For more specific information talk to a Tool and Die Man or contact a local Junior college that offers a machine technology certificate.
