Are there any drawing standards that dictate the aircraft orientation in drawing views("top", "front" "left" views)? As for me, a "top View" would always be looking down at the top of the aircraft, with forward to the left. A "Front View" would be looking at the left side of the aircraft. A "Left View" would be a looking aft from the front of the plane. A "Right View" would be looking forward from the aft of the plane.

I think you've got it down. Chris' attachment agrees.[thumbsup2]

Thanks for your replies...but what I am looking for is a document dictates that the aircraft look to the left. Some of the people where I work want the "Front View" to be looking at the front of the aircraft. That would make the "Top View" looking down, "Left Side View" looking at the right side of the aircraft and "Right Side View" looking at the left side of the aircraft. There is ASME Y14.100 for Engineering Drawing Practices, but are there any STANDARDS that dictate the orientation of aircraft views? Again, thanks for any input.

The one I show is from a standard, just can't say which.

That is what "Front View" means.

Here is a view of the front of the whatever.

Why would you want a front view that shows the side of something?

thread174-212099 was the original post.

Like I said there convention in the UK, at least defense, was that the nose of the A/C was to the left on the 'primary' view. It was in a Def Stan which is the UK equivalent to a Mil Std.

If you are defense then it's probably contained in one of the specs your contract references.

timrobts,

The assumption I make on my drawings is that "left" is my left hand.

If I want absolute orientation, I use port, starboard, fore and aft.
