Standard bridge details & good v bad practice guides etc 2

Hi there,

I would like to ask your help to try in this thread to collate standard bridge details from around the globe and also any good v. bad practice guides, etc. especially for the most common types of bridges, but also any "by exception" non-standard solutions - if you could paste your links to any such sources it would be much appreciated!

This is a link to NYSDOT standard bridge details. The second link is the NYSDOT Bridge Manuals. In the US, most DOT's have standard sheets and bridge manuals; some DOT's put all of their details into their bridge manual.

Kansas, Colorado, Illinois, Oregon DOT's have excellent bridge manuals, as do a number of states. Pick a time when you're not busy for a few weeks and start exploring the various DOT and trade association websites. There's a lot of information out there, it would be impossible to post every link.

regarding "good v. bad practice", it's hard to say. Sometimes government agencies suffer from "instituional inertia" i.e. "we've always done it this way", or "i like this", or i don't like that". However, agency practices are sometimes based on geography, past history with certain details and materials, contractor preferences, etc. In NY, the DOT does work with contractor associations, fabricators, suppliers etc to determine what is and what isn't practical.

There really isn't any "bad" practice. Bridge details are sort of like managing mutual funds - bad details get dropped in favor of higher performing details over time.

@Mike_311: Good point about "bad" ones - these would be rather rare; what I had in mind are publications such as CIRIA C543 Bridge Detailing Guide (UK). The focus is obviously on the "good", but they actually do show some side by side examples of good v. bad details - here is an example:
