I am fairly new to FEA and Abaqus and am having a little trouble wrapping my head around what is the practical difference between standard vs explicit.

From what I understand standard is capable of handling compression simulations however for drop tests and crushing explicit is better suited. How would one know what strain rates are better modeled in explicit?

I am not asking for a definite answer just some assistance in getting acquainted with the two analysis types.

Thanks

My general rule of thumb is if you can assume quasi-static use standard. If the contact or deformation is too nasty for standard switch to explicit. I hope this helps.
