We are planning for the start up of the Diesel Hydrotreater unit in refinery. The unit consist of Hydrotreater and Amine treating facility. The diesel feed is hving 2000 ppm Sulphur and the plant is designed to produce 500 ppm sulphur diesel.

The problem we are going to face is the Sour gas which will be produce at the end of the operation. We are not ready with our Sulphur Recovery Unit so we have the problem that is - where to divert high H2S content gas recovered from Amine Stripper which is in our unit???

Can anyone help to provide options???

Thanks in advance. Nirav Kholiya

Dear Nirav,
I suggest you to check the sulfur in the diesel cut, when you are going to start.
What I feel, is you have DHDS designed for Arab mix crude, and in practice, you may not get it often.
So I think, it's better to start with low sulfur crude, say 1% or so sulfur in diesel feed. That way you can limit the H2S in sour gas to a lower value. You can divert this stream to LPG amine absrober unit feed stream, if needed.
Also may I know what they do with, H2S rich gas presently?
You are talking about the expansion of existing refinery, so they should have old installation where sour gas would be treated.

You may be able to route the acid gas to flare depending on the environmental regulations you have at your site.

I assume the pressure safety valves on the amine regenerator go to flare. Typically, the amine regenerator will have a high pressure over-ride valve when your SRU can't talk all the load or has an upset, this valve would also typically go to flare, either a common refinery flare system or a dedicated acid gas flare.

You haven't got a lot of choices frankly.

Thank both of you for the reply.

Satish, to reply to your doubts, the refinery is processing low sulphur crude and that is why this refinery did not have any treating facility required earlier for its prduct range as far as Sulphur is concerned. So, there was no DHDS unit in the refinery and hence, no SRU. At present, they do not have high quantity of sour gas stream in the refinery. so they are flaring the same.

TD2K, thnx for reply. I think the the option for starting the unit with sour gas to flare is the suitable one under the circumstances.
