static vs centrifugal casting test

A consulting engineer I am working with is specifying equipment where one manf. centrifugally casts the highly stressed components and the other static casts. He is leaning towards the centrifugal casting but the static cast vendor now says they will centrifugally cast. We don't entirely trust them on this since it would require a sizable investment on their part, but it would be difficult to eliminate them from bidding if they say they will do it. Is there a way to test a finished product to determine if the part was centrifugally or static cast?

Hi,
metallographic examination could indicate the thermal gradient direction of solidification dendrites. Depending on part design sectioning may not be required.
Furthermore in the qualification process you would normally test in tension specimens sectioned from the casting in the direction of maximum stress.
It is customary to request from the foundry a set of fixed manufacturing documents (signed and dated) with all operations specified, and to insist for witnessing the process from start to finish.

Microstructure study of the as cast specimen can easily reveal the difference. Static cast will have equiaxed grains while the centrifugally cast will haveelongated grains in the direction of spinning. Also the grain structure will be different from core to surface. Also a lot of segregation will be noticed .
