Greetings,

I have a spec that says "steam trap installation requires a minimum of 12 in [300 mm] for static lift and 6 in [150 mm] for the dirt leg." Can someone please explain static lift to me? I can't find anything on the internet explaining what it is and how we achieve it.

Thanks

Definition of static

1 :exerting force by reason of weight alone without motion

Definition of lift

transitive verb
1 a :to raise from a lower to a higher position :elevate

You need total 18" clear below the connection of the condensate drain piping. 12" of condensate column is needed to operate the trap. The trap discharge piping and trap mounting need to be at least 12" below the connection. Another 6" drop is needed for the dirt leg.

You should make sure all steam coils or steam equipment that need trapping must be mounted at least 18" above the floor unless you can locate the trap and condensate piping in the floor below to provide the total 18" drop.

Thank you lilliput1. This is very helpful.
